Direct Fired Rotary Kilns

Radiation is the primary mode of heat transfer. Direct fired rotary kilns from Thermal Processing Solutions can be supplied gas or oil fired in a parallel flow or counter flow arrangement. In a direct fired kiln, heat transfer rate and process atmosphere composition/volume are dependent, therefore consideration must be given to the compatibility of the process material with the process gas composition as well as the gas velocity. In addition to the combustion products, other gases such as steam can be introduced into the kiln atmosphere.

TPS direct rotary coolers are suited to applications requiring:

  • Processes require an oxidizing atmosphere with the possible addition of steam
  • Processes can be in direct combustion product contact
  • Materials that require high heat to fix a physical property and suited to a temperature profile limited by a single heat source
  • Materials that are not sensitive to entrainment. Sufficiently coarse particle size distribution or high specific gravity to tolerate the process gas sweeping velocity
  • Processes that can be in direct contact with refractory
  • Processes requiring exposure to a controlled, repeatable and uniform temperature profile
  • Processes with reaction kinetics improved by solid/solid or solid/gas contact
  • Processes that require a volatile component to be thermally desorbed from a substrate
  • Materials that are conduction heat transfer limited, and benefit ting from the dynamic exposure to a radiant heat source
  • Particulate materials with fragile structures

A TPS kiln can be supplied pre-assembled on a main frame for smaller units, or more typically as subassemblies for field erection and refractory installation. Process and power controls are supplied in pre-wired control panels, or a control P&ID drawing can be provided. The kiln is normally provided with a pre-piped and prewired rack mounted combustion system, with terminations located in an electrical marshalling panel, thereby reducing the installation and startup time required.
